Handmade Kennel



My son has been pestering me to buy a dog house for his pet dog, Richie, ever since he arrived at our home last November. But I just couldn't bring myself to spent on something that may bring me more work to clean up. I might also end up buying something that the little creature dislike. After all, who will be moving in to the new apartment if this happened??

So after months of playing 'TaiJi' (delaying his request) with my son, I finally found this carton box that I can turn it into a temporary yet economical dog kennel. You know about 'test the market' right? So this is the way to test a dog on how he except his new home, heex.

I started out by cutting the pointed edge of the two sides of the roof. Bending the front and the back pieces of the roof to meet at the top of the roof, fixing them all together with masking tape. And next, I cut out the door and the heart shaped window... Getting the kid to do the painting make them more involved in the project he hoped for. Everything comes in place in less than 3 hours and now we shall put our fingers cross...

After much supervision, we found that Richie didn't quiet like his move in to his new house! But to our surprise, he will take shelter when there's thunderstorm and during pouring days. Amazingly, according to my son, he will take cover in it when someone scolded him or pretend to bit his backside. Hahaha, what a smart dog knowing he has a hideout place now!

DIY Plastic Egg Carton Lantern

This was another lantern project submitted for the competition which was not shortlisted. It  was a combination of 5 plastic egg cartons (translucent type) added with flowers made from it as decorations. I used the clear egg tray for those flowers, cut out each individual egg mould from the tray and coloured them with Peel n Stick colors, this created a transparent look with the lights on. I sticked two layers for each flower, one with the petal shape cut and spread out below the other without any cutting on top, which is the centre piece of the flower. I added some flower paintings in fabric paints using a more oriental style, the pop up effect of the paints looks outstanding on the plain plastic background. After the competition, I did some reflection and analyzed that I shouldn't have left the lantern plain without a coat of paint, and I have added too much flowers to it. Deadline Rush - DIY Lantern making

It has been a busy week with a project to take part in a local lantern making competition. I thought I couldn't make it due to a few other things that came in at the same time. As Teachers' Day is drawing near, I have to produce at least another 8 gifts for my son's teachers as a token of appreciation. As I was not technically trained and the support from my 'personal technical officer' was unhopeful, I was unable to fix the light for the lantern. Luckily, I was able to recall a shop at People's Park Centre which might be able to help me with this. After much persuasion, the stall assistant is willing to do me that favor, he gathered the parts: LED bulbs, wires and battery holder etc., and started soldiering... Yeah! At last everything turns out well, though I stayed up till 3am to get those 8 gifts done. Well, I deserve a big pat on my shoulder! DIY Pep Bottles Lamp Shade

It takes me around a year to collect the materials for these two projects. I've finished assembling the pieces many months back but hesitated to put it up as I've no idea how to fix these lamp shades with the existing lightings I'd on the ceiling. And truly, it takes some intuition to get a job done sometimes, and that was how I climbed up the high chair, stretched my hands and legs and go all the way without those thoughts that it can't be done... No regggrreet afterall!! Things fell in place. I was actually inspired by the creations I saw at a Christmas Recycling Exhibition done by the disabled at a shopping centre at Orchard road. Their works were amazing, turning waste plastic pep bottles into beautiful shades is really time consuming. It involved lots of hard work including cleaning the bottles, cutting out the shapes and combining them to form a shade. I replicated that idea to make two shades for my foyer and dining area. It's really impressive
