Mid Autumn Festival, Dragon Puppet Making Competion

Just received a leaflet from the school to participate in a dragon puppet making for the upcoming Mid Autumn Festival celebration 中秋节.

As the lantern making competition held at Chinatown Point has been put on halt, I decided to guide on this project.

Basically, the instructions given by the school to make this puppet is very simple. If we were to follow it exactly, I'm sure 80% of the dragons will look almost alike. Really, it is not so much of whether this puppet we made will win in the competition a not, it is the passion in me to make a difference in every project I committed doing.

We had a brainstorm session before we put everything in place. But, I got to really thank myself for the huge collections of recycled materials. If all these are not within reach, what magic can I perform? Golden & silver foil ice-cream wrappers, fresh milk carton box, bottle caps, polyfoam fruit net (the pink dragon body) etc.; all these are simply wastes that end up in the bin.

But when I saw my son picking up the dragon and dance it in the air, I knew that my magic wand has taken into effect again... At least, the next time round when you happened to come across these materials, you'll wonder whether or not to dump it.

DIY Plastic Egg Carton Lantern

This was another lantern project submitted for the competition which was not shortlisted. It  was a combination of 5 plastic egg cartons (translucent type) added with flowers made from it as decorations. I used the clear egg tray for those flowers, cut out each individual egg mould from the tray and coloured them with Peel n Stick colors, this created a transparent look with the lights on. I sticked two layers for each flower, one with the petal shape cut and spread out below the other without any cutting on top, which is the centre piece of the flower. I added some flower paintings in fabric paints using a more oriental style, the pop up effect of the paints looks outstanding on the plain plastic background. After the competition, I did some reflection and analyzed that I shouldn't have left the lantern plain without a coat of paint, and I have added too much flowers to it. Deadline Rush - DIY Lantern making

It has been a busy week with a project to take part in a local lantern making competition. I thought I couldn't make it due to a few other things that came in at the same time. As Teachers' Day is drawing near, I have to produce at least another 8 gifts for my son's teachers as a token of appreciation. As I was not technically trained and the support from my 'personal technical officer' was unhopeful, I was unable to fix the light for the lantern. Luckily, I was able to recall a shop at People's Park Centre which might be able to help me with this. After much persuasion, the stall assistant is willing to do me that favor, he gathered the parts: LED bulbs, wires and battery holder etc., and started soldiering... Yeah! At last everything turns out well, though I stayed up till 3am to get those 8 gifts done. Well, I deserve a big pat on my shoulder! DIY Castle Pinata

This post is specially dedicated to a friend, Mindy, a big applause to a great mum who created this castle pinata for her kids at their birthday party! Didn't take a good picture of it before it's gone with the hitting and smashing from the kids for the goodness in it to explode. By the way, pinata has been a significant tradition 'toy' suspended from a height, intended to be broken by blindfolded children with a stick. It symbolises hope to look upon and has been a way to celebrate special occasions such as Birthdays, Christmas and New Year. Basically, a recycled carton box to form the shape of the castle, rounded hollow tubes were added on the corners as the towers and cone shapes were topped on the tops. Colored crepe papers were cut and decorated. It sounds as simple as it is, but it's time, effort and loves that contributed to the making! Great to share awesomeness from friends here...
